Dr. Lisa Shumate
At nine years old, after confirming with her mom and dad that she was going to be too tall to be a racehorse jockey, Dr. Lisa decided she would become a veterinarian. In pursuit of that dream, she attended Texas A&M University and was accepted into veterinary school there in 1991. After graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1995, she spent the next seventeen years in small animal practice in the Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth regions.
In 2012, she and her husband decided they were ready for a change of scenery. They had often talked about living near the mountains someday, and that dream came true by the end of that year, when they trekked halfway cross-country with their six dogs, three cats, and two horses. They were blessed to find their perfect home outside of Rutherfordton, where they have relished gorgeous sunset views over the distant mountains ever since.
In twenty-plus years since graduation, Dr. Lisa has found her greatest passion to be educating pet parents, enabling them to best care for their fur-kids and enjoy the blessings of their companionship. In the ever-increasing busyness of traditional hospital practice, she has found it harder and harder to feel she’s making a difference. Wags and Whiskers Pet Wellness Clinic was birthed from her desire to slow things down, taking the time to address the whole patient in front of her, while making the visit to the vet as low-stress as possible.
